Media introduction

Media Introduction

Empire state analysis.
When studying media, I found that i did not understand some of the terminology used when analysing or creating a film so I thought i would research and take note of some of the words and their meanings.
Terminology;
Camera shot-
shot type,
angle,
Panning
Tilting
zooming
transition)
Mise-en-scene- This is how the arrangement of the contents of the scene represents the mood or action in the film/ play. This can include props, lighting and scenery.
Location and setting- This is an area in which your film takes place. For example a field, a warehouse, a train station etc.
Lighting- This is an aspect of mise-en-scene and something that greatly helps reflect the mood and atmosphere of a shot. For example, by having a room that is lit only by moonlight through a window that casts a shadow on the rest of the room, meaning there is very little lighting gives the viewer/ audience and uneasy feeling. Or another example is a hospital. If the room is lit very brightly with clean, white lights, it makes the audience feel safe.
Costume and makeup- By using costume and make-up, it makes a film seem more real. Costume is the clothing that an actor wears to become a certain character and bring them to life. Make-up also helps the actor bring the character to life. Costume and make-up is also part of mise-en-scene.
Diegetic- sound is a sound that you can see being made on the screen. For example, a door opening and closing would be diegetic or footsteps.
non digetic- sounds that have been edited in and could not have been made in the scene. E.g. music that builds tension
